With the continued growing demand for food crops both here and across the world, farmland in the U.S. ended 2013 holding excellent value again. This fertile asset has not only realized amazing growth in value over the recent years and held that value, but again has shown increased price appreciation in multiple states including Iowa, Indiana and Ohio.
Iowa once again hit record value with a 5.1% increase in prices in 2013 versus 2012. According to a Business Week article, an acre of Iowa farmland cost $3,250 (in inflation-adjusted dollars) on average in 2004; whereas today, an acre averages $8,716, almost tripling in value. Perdue University reported large increases in Indiana top land, which was up 19.1% to $9,177 per acre over 2012. Even “poor quality” Indiana land saw an increased 14.7% to a value of $5,750 an acre. Ohio also realized strong growth in farmland value, according to the News Journal. Data from the Ohio Ag Statistics Service presented a 12% increase for bare cropland in Ohio for 2013, which averaged $5,600 an acre, up from $5,000 in 2012.

The company believes these prices are relatively stable and will hold this value, and reflect growing demand for U.S. crops driven by the domestic economic recovery and dramatically growth in world population and income.
